Title:    City of New York.

Description:    A beautiful 1895 large format map of New York City by Joseph Rudolph Bien. Depicts the borough of Mahattan, Queens, and the Bronx as far as Yonkers and Westchester. Features good detail of the streets, trains, and parks as well as ferry routes and piers. Bien’s Atlas of New York was issued as an elephant folio and there is consequently no centerfold. Prepared for inclusion in the 1895 edition of Joseph Bien’s Atlas of New York State. An important piece for collectors of New York City cartography.

Cartographer:    Joseph R. Bien was a topographer and an engineer working the later part of the 19th century. His name appears a number of state and regional atlases, including the important 1895 Atlas of New York. Most of Joseph Bien's work was published in conjunction with the New York Lithographing, Engraving & Printing Company, which was founded by Julius Bien. Joseph was almost certainly related to Julien, though whether he was a son, cousin, or brother, remains unknown. Click here for a list of rare maps from Joseph R. Bien.

Size:   Printed area measures 24 x 16.5 inches (60.96 x 41.91 centimeters)

Condition:    Very Good Condition. Minor verso repairs mostly confined to upper and lower margins. Blank on verso.
